Planned Giving
A variety of ways are available to make charitable gifts. In addition to gifts of money (gifts of cash are the most common way of giving), two other common methods of planned giving include making a bequest in your will, or giving appreciated assets.
Appreciated Assets
Gifting appreciated assets (typically equities, or stocks) can provide a significant tax advantage. Your gift would provide you an income tax deduction equal to the current value of the asset, a higher value than your original cost. As long as the asset is classified as a long term capital gains property (held for at least 12 months), you also avoid paying capital gains taxes on the growth of the asset.
For example, if you gift a stock purchased for $5,000 that has appreciated to a value of $15,000, the value of your tax deduction would be $15,000. (If you sold the stock, $10,000 of appreciation could be subject to capital gains taxes). As a nonprofit foundation, IFFGD is not subject to capital gains taxes and would benefit from the full appreciated value of your gift.
Making a Bequest
You may specify distribution of your assets through your will. You should always work with your attorney to draft or change your will. Bequests to IFFGD are not taxable as part of your estate.
There are many options and methods for making a bequest and you should choose the type that best suits your personal objectives. For example, a bequest could be a stated dollar amount, or it could be a specific property or asset. Your bequest could be immediate, or contingent upon non-survival of preferred beneficiaries (such as your spouse).
You can direct your bequest to be used for the general needs of the foundation, for research, or for a specific field of interest.
Whatever method of giving you use, and whatever amount you choose to give, thank you for being a part of our community of support.
